So where do we start on our journey to achieving a balanced life?

In an effort to further understand work-life balance, I wrote in my last post that I stumbled across the Work Life Balance Centre [www.worklifebalancecentre.org]. There, I assessed my own life against their interactive ‘Life Wheel’, and this is what I found:

Life Wheel: How it works

You highlight eight areas of your life and score them from 1 (not happy) to 10 (very happy). So, here are my ‘life areas’ and why I scored the them in the way I did:

  • Starting at the top, Work: Obviously not an area I’m happy with. I want to work, earn money, develop in a specialty that I find interesting and apply myself. I like quantitative results but this is completely lacking currently and something I’m working on changing. Currently, though, it’s a very lonely 3. 
  • Household: 4. I mean, who LOVES cleaning? Who is ever happy doing that!? I guess if I could afford a cleaner, that would be a much higher score. But alas, it’s up to me to do the tidying, laundry, cleaning, cooking, washing up. Gardening and DIY I rarely find the time to do these days. But they’re so overdue that it’s gotten to a point where I’m very good at ignoring it… Again, if only we had the finances to get all the renovation work done to get it to a point where we can ‘interior design’ it, then I’m probably be much more content… Ah, how I hate money…! :-[
  • Moving on to Relationships: I have to admit, other aspects like household and parenting have been taking over my life a little that I’ve been somewhat neglecting my husband. I hadn’t actually thought or realised it up until I did the Life Wheel assessment, though, so it’s something that I’ve taken notice of and will work on!
  • Clearly, I put a lot of my time and effort into being a parent and looking after Dragon – and I’m happy with that input. Mostly. Often, I feel tired and low energy but I still give that aspect as much as I can. and if I can’t, my husband does and I’m grateful and love observing their bond, too. It is good to take the back seat occasionally.
  • Extended family (3). By this I mean my parents and sister. And some close members beyond that, but primarily my ‘close family’ when I was growing up until I started my own family. I really, really wish they were closer. I’m in the UK, they’re in Germany, and I see them AT MOST 3 times a year. Since having Dragon, it’s starkly obvious that family support close-by is SO invaluable. And I miss them dearly. My sister also has her own family now and it’s a shame that the relationship between Dragon and his cousin are built mostly over FaceTime.
  • Oh how I long to Travel! Most definitely an area that’s neglected and we’re working on that. Having a house in need of improvement, a toddler and family abroad definitely puts a bit of a damper on the freedom to travel. The list is long and I do wonder when the time will come when we can see a bit of the world again… Score, 2.
  • Friendship has improved since our move back down south from Scotland. I don’t see them as often as when I was living in London, but I cherish the moments more, set time aside for phone calls, and the time we do get to spend together are more memorable, quality moments. Or maybe it’s just part of growing up, who knows. But I feel good about the friends in my life, the level of involvement. But why it’s a 5? Because we are now part of a new community and I would like to build more friendships locally, become part of this community. So there is certainly still room for improvement.
  • We always think we could use more Me, Leisure and Relaxation time, don’t we? I do think I get a decent amount physically, but I’m unable to shut off my brain. It’s always buzzing. Especially in a house that requires work. So taking the time to go to gym, for walks, meditate, etc. is important and I’m working on that. Even treated myself to the ‘Hygge‘ book, so there! It’s already moving upwards and it’s a high 4.

So you’ll see there that it’s far from a perfect circle on the 10 scale. I’m hard to please, huh? Or maybe I’m hard on myself and have high expectations? It’s probably both… But having made this assessment is already giving me a kind of focus. I want to do better. I want to achieve more and I’m taking small steps towards making that happen. It feels good.

A KonMari Home

Having spent a lot of time trawling through Pinterest for inspirations on how to make my home my dream home – furniture, tableware, pictures, you name it – I’ve come to find that it’s not just about having beautiful objects but how to make shine the things that mean a lot to me. And the things that don’t shine – love it or just put up with it because it’s absolutely necessary – organise them in such a way that makes them acceptable. In other words, organising the chaos. 
I have been tirelessly adding to my “organised chaos” board for months, years even, in the hopes of being inspired to apply similar methods of organisation in my own home. Ha! Wishful thinking. I’ve bought a couple of books but they’ve been more focused on cleaning – tackling the dust and dirt elements in the house. With a Japanese mother, we’ve been learning to clean from an early age. Every New Year’s Eve, the house is turned on its head to ensure the new year is welcomed afresh, with a clean house, clean soul. It’s almost a sin to not be spending New Year’s Eve cleaning. All day. The whole house. Not exactly any child’s concept of fun, even if I appreciate its concept. So ok now cleaning and that’s not the issue. Having grown up in a house where nothing, and I mean NOTHING, gets tossed, ridding myself of unwanted, unnecessary things felt unnatural. 

So I’ve had seen Marie Kondo’s book on Amazon during my efforts to find a book that would get to the nub of the issue in my home – too much stuff, hoarding, accumulating and just shifting things from here to there. But one recent random outing to the shopping centre, I decided on a whim to pop into the bookshop. And what should be on the shelf but the second book she’s just published? Spark Joy by Marie Kondo is a more succinct publication of her theory and instead focused on giving an illustrated guide for those who just want to get on with it. I’m one of those people, although admittedly, I did read her theory on the first seventy pages… So the process works through the categories of items, not by room, in the prescribed order:

  1. Clothes
  2. Books
  3. Komono
  4. Sentimental items

Clothes

We moved in August last year and I spent the two months leading up to the move sorting through my clothes. In the KonMari way, however, she says to gather ALL of your clothing and anything that falls into the category – shoes, accessories as well – and put it all together so you have a clear overview of everything you own. And my goodness me. Did I really still own this much stuff? So I started again, identifying items that sparked joy and discarding the rest. 

 
It’s now been a month and what you don’t realise at the time you’re going through this process is that how much lighter you feel as a consequence of owning less. And then I came across this article which truly sums up the benefits of ‘capsule’ wardrobes. I wouldn’t go as far to say that mine is now a capsule wardrobe, but the benefits outlined within this article resonate with my experience:

  1. Time and efficiency. Not only are there fewer choices to make in the morning, I now have a much clearer overview of all my belongings and feel much better emotionally for wearing things that bring me joy for whatever reason. Not only that, there is less to wash, iron and fold. 
  2. Self confidence. By wearing things that bring me joy, not only does it lift my mood but makes me more confident as well. Confident that I’m wearing something that suits me, fits me well, and is representative of my personality. 

I can genuinely say it’s been a good exercise and would encourage anyone to give it a try. I’ve worked my way through the books category and about to finish off the paperwork. The most daunting of categories, konomo, awaits me on the other side… You’ll definitely be seeing some before and after pics from those!!

How Making Hard Choices Becomes Our Identity

So, if you read my last post, you’ll remember that I’m going through some kind of self discovery mission. Or identity crises. Call it what you will, I’m trying to find out where this is all going. Deep, huh? I guess I’m quite contemplative and reached a point where I feel I’m more of a by-stander than actually in charge…

I came across this book by Paul Tiger, Barbara Barron and Kelly Tiger: Do What You Are. (I’ll add it to the shop section so you can easily find it.) It’s based on the concept of Personality Type – also known as the Myers-Briggs Personality Type. If you’re not familiar, it’s something that I also came across for the first time in grad/post-graduate school only five years ago. Essentially, it measures your preferences across four areas and determines how you might fit an organisation, for example. A lot of companies apparently use this, and in our university, it was an experiment for putting us into groups and observe the performance, the theory being that compatible personality types will work effectively and efficiently. My group did very well, but it certainly wasn’t without its struggles! In hindsight, although I wouldn’t necessarily class any of my group members as “friends”, there may have been something to this. So I got curious.

You’re assigned four letters which makes up a personality type (out of 16). This isn’t to say that you don’t have some tendencies from other personalities. Some preferences are stronger than others and you could fall anywhere on a spectrum of Introvert – Extravert, for instance. I couldn’t remember my letters from the comprehensive test at university, so I have had to go back and self-assess based on preferences I’m aware of, and by reading examples. So it tells me I’m this combination: ISTP – Introverted, Sensing, Thinking, Perceiving. I don’t want to bore you with the details, so here’s a summary: A realist. I’m very analytical and see things as they are. Practical, fair and logical, base decisions on hard facts. Quiet and reserved, can give of impression of shyness, cool or aloof.

There it is. LOGICAL. It’s almost fair to say that I’m obsessed with it. Things need to make sense. That’s probably why I used to love mathematics in school so much. My husband often jokes that he should get a shirt made up for me that reads ‘Maths makes sense’. Reading the full personality type description, it fits me like a shoe. So what’s my career? What should I be doing with my life? Ah, it’d just be all so easy if the answers were written in a book like some kind of formula, wouldn’t it? And then randomly, last night, I couldn’t find anything I wanted to watch and stumbled across some TED talks on Netflix.

I watched a playlist, and some I’d seen already so I wasn’t paying all that much attention until Ruth Chang started. She talked about how to make hard choices. Ultimately, this is what has lead me down this path, isn’t it? Read my previous post and you’ll see that my head is just a jumble at the moment. I can’t seem to make much sense of the chaos within – should I or shouldn’t I return to work? If I do, what will I do? Is it worth it if there’s a chance that we might move again? What’s the most transferable career that I can do in case we do move again? These are big questions! To me, anyway. You may be a bit more pragmatic and find it easy to come up with a solution. I could just do any job, but as I find myself in a rather privileged position of having time to find myself, I’m being choosey. Too choosey, even. It’s like being a vegetarian in a vegetarian restaurant. I’m used to having two – if I’m lucky, three – choices on the menu. I’m overwhelmed in a vegetarian restaurant. Everything sounds SO GOOD. How do you choose? So Ruth Chang, in this TED talk, has this incredibly LOGICAL way of explaining (which utterly appealed to me, obviously) that hard choices are not founded necessarily on facts or one being better than the other. It’s just not clear-cut like that most of the time. She explains that it boils down to what is it that I want.  Where do I see myself going with this? Where do I want to be?  These hard choices we make, make up the person we want to be. Take a look.

A lightbulb went up in my head. So I’m back to square one. I won’t find the answer spelled out in a book. I won’t find the answer by looking around; I have to look within. While this personality type book explains in what setting I probably would be most satisfied – certain criteria that are more or less met – I need to figure out what life I long for. How I want to live my existence.

So start number 2: Do I start with what I enjoy doing? While I have a long list of things I class as hobbies, I never take the time to really immerse myself in any of them. Sewing, drawing, painting, pottery, photography, going for walks. Or perhaps meditation and taking a time-out each day is that way forward…?

I’m Back

I’m sorry for the radio silence over the last few months. Life took over and whenever I did draft a post in the middle of the night when my mind was racing, it never felt right to publish it.

In any case, to update you briefly on recent life events… we moved to SCOTLAND! Yes, bonny wee Scotland. Thankfully the sun has come out for at least five minutes just now so I’m feeling inspired. Inspired to write, to share. It’s certainly been an adjustment living up here. For a start, my legs have given up walking anywhere, and it’s been replaced with driving. Consequently, I’ve put on 3 (yes, THREE!!!!) kilograms, which had further dampened my spirits to write any posts here. I have invested in a FitBit, though, and signed up to WeightWatchers. I’ve also joined the “local” gym – a ten minute drive away – but I’ve been going quite regularly in the last ten days since joining (mainly by making appointments with random people in the gym – health check, gym intro, etc.). It seems to be helping as I’ve lost 500g already so I’m feeling positive… and my muscles are positively aching! All good.

Dragon has started a new school and settled in very well. So much so that we’ve upped his attendance days from 2.5 to 4.5 days! Which leaves no excuse for me to not write more regularly on ZingMama…! And boy oh boy, I have so much that’s been going through my head. It’s mainly been a sort of identity crisis. With all this “free” time, I feel as though I ought to do something more productive than just cleaning the house, catching up on some reading, social media, fitness, and the like, you know?

Our move to Scotland has always been with a more permanent end-goal in mind. We want to settle somewhere where we’re not slaving away at a job to someone else’s benefit. We want to spend more time with our son and enjoy the moments we have. We want to grow the family. And be near family and friends. My family is in Germany and my husband’s are UK and New Zealand, so we’ll see where life will take us. It’s all up in the air… it always is with us. So we’re trying to be better about planning next steps and we’re more financially grounded now which should hopefully help in our decision-making.

So, in my quest for future planning / proofing, I’m considering returning to work. I’ve not worked in a “proper” work setting for over five years now. Just as long as I was in employment before I decided to return to university and get a Masters. I could’ve had ten years of experience on my CV by now had I decided back then that continuing to work my way up the career ladder was better suited to me. So there’s that. I have BA in Graphic Design Communications which I never truly applied in a work setting. Now I have an MSc in Strategic Marketing and still no sign of applying my education to earn a living. Coupled with five years of events management experience and my CV seems totally in chaos. You see my dilemma.

This led me to the National Careers Service website to try to figure out how best I can apply my interests and skills in a work setting. The idea is you take several assessments and at the end it spits out a report with suitable jobs to match my profile. Best matches for my skills were “Medicine and Nursing” and “Transport”. WOW, REALLY!? Then below, it listed two more job families I may be interested in: “Arts, Crafts and Design” and “Financial Services”. That’s more like it. So after taking a few more tests and analysing job profiles, I briefly toyed with the idea of doing Accountancy. My mum is an accountant, and more than just bookkeeping and reconciling statements, it turns out that accountants also give strategic advice based on finances. I had never given the profession much thought so this was news to me. I was excited by the notion of “Strategy”. After realising, however, that a minimum of three years’ exams and work experience are required, I went back to the drawing board. In the grand scheme of things, it’s certainly not a very long time. And I wish I had taken steps to figure this out three years ago so that at this point, I would already be mostly through the examinations… hindsight, ey?

Further contemplation has led me to the conclusion that if I were to return to work, my best bet is to build up my CV by applying my actual Masters education and putting it to some bloody good use. Why else did I spend £11,500 on a degree that I’m not using!? That’s just daft. I do have my reservations, however. Or maybe it’s just a confidence boost I need. it’s been four years since I graduated. Annoyingly, digital marketing was barely covered on the course and I was furious already back then. One day – 3.5 hours of class – out of a whole year. It was just f*&^ed. Excuse my French. It gets my blood boiling again just thinking about it. Needless to say, after graduating from the course, I wasn’t confident about my digital marketing skills, let alone four years later when things have been progressing at such a rapid rate that probably even the digital marketers actually in employment are struggling to keep up with the ever-changing digital landscape! I’m therefore considering doing a top-up course in digital marketing to give me a fighting chance when I put my CV out there into the big webbed world of job sites. The endless trawling through job specs. Ugh. I do not miss that ONE BIT. Is this really the best course of action…? I convince myself one way but I have an equally strong argument for the opposite and there’s this endless debate in my head. I really don’t know.

It’s funny, isn’t it? You work so hard on being a parent, full-time, and then suddenly, when they start school, you’re sort of lost. Nobody really warns you about what’s to come when you’re pregnant. You’re then suddenly thrown in the deep end of parenthood and somewhat re-emerge years later to find that you’ve lost yourself a little along the way. You’re so committed to someone else, doing the day-to-day tasks and coping as best as you know how. You lose yourself a little along the way. What’s your purpose? To make sure that this little person grows into a responsible, caring, kind, happy human being who is independent from my wallet? Ensure they become the best version of themselves? To find peace with yourself and do the best you can? Provide food and shelter? What’s the benchmark? What’s good enough? Where do you stop? There’s this endless pressure everywhere, and “competition” with others that I’ve forgotten to look after myself. Looking at peers from my MSc course climbing the career ladder, friends with kids returning to work and also climbing the career ladder or bringing in an additional income (and therefore being more financially independent), other stay-at-home mums who appear to have their perfect homes spotless, two-course dinner on the table every night without fail… Everywhere I look, I seem to feel inadequate. I really can’t answer those questions and maybe I should give myself time to do exactly that.

And then I bought this magazine “Psychologies”. Every sub-title on the cover seemed to somehow resonate with my emotional state. Re-invent yourself. Introvert or Extrovert? – Transform your family dynamic. FIND PEACE. I think that’s ultimately where it’s at, isn’t it. Self-acceptance, living wholeheartedly and stopping this endless game of comparing myself to others to feel self-worth, which inevitably and undeniably has the opposite effect. Self acceptance. Yes, I’m saying it again. Over and over in my head. Accept myself for who I am. But there’s the rub. I need to understand who I am first.

So that’s where this all begins. Where does my story start? What do I want my story to be? So I’ve find myself on this path of self discovery. Care to take it with me? I feel a little bit like Bridget Jones here. Writing what seems like a diary entry. I’m about to give body measurements as though that somehow defines who I am. But it’s a start.

Health Plan, Revisited: 5K Goal

I have every intention of losing weight as I said in my New Years Resolutions post, but there is an attitude-behaviour gap that I decided I need to tackle. Despite wanting to look great in the style of clothes I like to wear – usually intended for those lucky Scandinavian tall skinny types – I just can’t seem to get my act together. When it comes to exercise, I have no discipline and upon ruthless self-analysis, I’m admittedly still guilty of eating those dreaded Dragon’s leftovers.

I read somewhere that a certain behaviour takes 6 weeks before it becomes a habit. SIX WEEKS. It’s daunting but in the grand scheme of things, it actually is very little time, isn’t it? If it were a New Year’s resolution, by Valentine’s Day, I’d have new habits. That’s quite encouraging, actually, albeit only in theory.

Having invested in a comprehensive weight scale, I’ve been tracking my body in ways I’d never considered before. I actually still don’t thoroughly understand the difference between my BMI and Fat… So it’s obviously something that I’m still getting to grips with. But it’s been insightful. And disappointing. Despite having adjusted my diet to include more whole foods – and I’m thoroughly enjoying it! – portion control is something that is SO difficult. If a food takes 20 mins to send the message to my brain that it’s full, that’s 20 minutes of overeating!

When I looked in the mirror before the weekend – in my birthday suit – I did not like what was looking back at me. Somehow, despite my diet adjustments, I seemed to have ballooned around the thighs, bottom and um!? And here’s the comparison from a previous weigh-in:

My husband recently recommended a BBC programme he had seen  called ‘The Truth About… 3. Fat which I highly recommend. A doctor, overweight herself, conducts a number of experiments and speaks to various professionals to demystify the role of fat in our bodies. It’s a series and I’m looking forward to watching the one on calories. In any case, it turns out that short bursts of exercise – say 2 minutes of hard running followed by 1 minute of rest, repeated 7 times – is much more effective at burning fat. So effective that even hours later, the body is burning twice as much fat compared to a steady workout in the gym! 20 minutes!?! Is that really all I need to invest everyday to have my dream body? I’m inspired.

But not inspired enough to do anything. Not just yet anyway. Until I meet up with a friend who decided to enter a half marathon, despite never having run in her whole life! She asked me to join her but I declined! I mean, RUN?! HA!  Kudos to her, though, for being so ambitious! She’s teamed up with another mutual friend who is a regular runner, and she has an amazingly athletic physique. To be honest, I felt a bit sheepish that it never occurred to me that she actually runs, or even exercises, to have that amazing bod… Days later I came across a Facebook post by Nike to say they’ve got the Alex Monroe gifts ready for the runners crossing the finish line for the upcoming 10K run. I LOVE Alex Monroe!!! His delicate nature-inspired jewellery <3- Tell me more! I click through and start looking at the race details and with everything that’s happened recently, I’m thinking to myself “Running… it’s not actually such a daft idea. A half marathon is a bit too ambitious for me after months of no exercise whatsoever, but 10km might actually be achievable...”

THAT’s what inspired me! A combination of things – seeing what needs to be done, being more effective with it, and actually seeing the result of what could be if I work at it. And I don’t need to work hard. Well, I do, but for only 20-30 minutes at a time!

So here it goes. I’ve downloaded the Nike+ app (I already have the Nike Training Club app which I highly recommend. A free personal trainer on your phone! And you set the pace that suits you) to have a look at the training that was mentioned on the race website. And indeed, there are options of distances to train towards. I’ve opted for a 5K run to see how I would get on. It’s an 8-week programme with a combination of running, cross-training (swimming, cycling, yoga, etc.), and rest to build up your stamina to complete a 5K run. Eight weeks is also perfect for this to become a habit, right? (Provided that 6-weeks-to-become-a-habit thing is in fact true)

Thus far, I’ve completed two sessions in the evening after Dragon has gone to bed. The lighter evenings certainly help! It’s been really nice to get out of the house in the evening and shut off from the technology, chores, to-do lists, and everything else. Granted, I have my phone to track my distance, coach me, and play my music… but it’s time for me. I’m in my head, thinking about pushing myself, about the future, reflecting on my day. It’s a time out that I’m giving myself so it’s been a double-whammy of meditation and exercise. And I’ve been feeling energised in the evenings, without the exercise cutting into time of everything else that I’d like to do – be it blogging, catching up with family, watch a favourite TV programme, read.

On reflection, what’s also nice to know is that last time I fell pregnant with Dragon, I was also doing well with exercising (using the NTC app). So as we’re thinking about baby #2, it’s comforting to know that I’m looking after myself the best I can to make conceiving a healthy baby possible when the time is right.

P.S.: I’ve also stopped eating Dragon’s leftovers so hopefully that’ll help with the portion control. Heavier lunches and light dinners is another adjustment we’ve made.

Reflection: Food Attitude

I have said before how I was raised a vegetarian but I’d never really taken much interest in food as a child, or even as an adult. I never educated myself about it and my version of vegetarianism was meat substitutes, potatoes, bread and anything that went well with pasta, usually pesto. I recently had the pleasure of treating myself to a day in one of London’s oldest and arguably, most beautiful department stores: Liberty. Its Tudor architecture stands out in Central London, a true gem amongst the grey buildings and grey clouds backdrop. Step inside via the Wild at Heart flower shop on Great Marlborough Street to a bustling welcome. Liberty is more like a large, independent boutique than the typical department store you find elsewhere. Unwind in London: Nails Inc.

Sadly, a close friend of mine is moving back to Turkey. Her daughter is 4 months Dragon’s junior and they’re totally in love. Who knew that at age 2, they’d be entering into a long-distance romance? It is sad news all around but we wish them well and know it’s for the best – they’ll be near family and old friends, not to mention the sea, beach and sun!!! (No, I’m not jealous AT ALL!)
